Umuawulu’s New Yam Festival 2023: Traditional Ruler Igwe Egwuonwu Honors Diligent Farmers and Outstanding Student

Umuawulu, a vibrant community located in Awka South Local Government Area, recently experienced an infusion of tradition and recognition as its traditional ruler, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, celebrated the New Yam Festival for 2023. This annual event, a cornerstone of Umuawulu’s cultural calendar, was made even more memorable with rewards being given to hardworking farmers and a high-achieving student.

The proceedings kicked off with an all-night session of praise and thanksgiving, culminating in an interdenominational thanksgiving service hosted within the grand pavilion of Igwe Egwuonwu’s palace. This regal venue was packed to the brim with friends, in-laws, and well-wishers who journeyed from nearby communities to be part of this significant occasion.

With his wife and cabinet members by his side, Igwe Egwuonwu graciously received the numerous guests. In his address, he voiced his gratitude to God for the consistent love and protection showered upon Umuawulu. He also looked forward, praying for the continued prosperity of the community, including good health, peace, and bountiful harvests.

His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Don Onyenji, Anambra state’s Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism. The Commissioner emphasized the state’s keen interest in community cultural heritages and hinted at the establishment of a larger, state-wide New Yam Festival to further tap into the tourism potential. His address also underscored the importance of peace and harmony within the various communities.

Chiefs Azubuike Ekweozor and Ikechukwu Nkala, both members of the traditional cabinet, noted the festival’s global appeal, which draws Umuawulu natives from various parts of the world. They spoke of the unity it fosters, the encouragement it brings to farmers, and its pivotal role in upholding the community’s rich cultural traditions.

Amid these celebrations, the festival was not just about tradition but also about recognizing diligence and excellence. Among the rewarded were Mrs. Elizabeth Ekemezie, Juliet Ezenwosu, and notably, Mr. Chukwunonso Okeke, a first-class graduate in Microbiology. Okeke expressed his gratitude to Igwe Egwuonwu for his undying love and commitment to the growth of Umuawulu.

The event was graced by many dignitaries, including Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, and several other key figures from various sectors.

This festival has once again emphasized the significance of community, hard work, and the preservation of cultural values, ensuring that Umuawulu’s traditions continue to thrive and inspire for years to come.
