Igwe Joe Egwuonwu Bestows Prestigious Chieftaincy Title on NYSC DG

His Royal Majesty, Igwe Joe Egwuonwu, the traditional ruler of Umuawulu community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, conferred the Chieftaincy title of “Dekora” (meaning the strength of the people) on Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The ceremony took place during the NYSC cultural carnival for the 2024 Batch “A” Stream 1 Corps Members at the State NYSC Orientation Camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu.

Recognition of Outstanding Contributions

Igwe Egwuonwu explained that the title honored Brigadier General Ahmed’s significant contributions to the NYSC Orientation Camp, the welfare of Corps Members, and the development of the host communities. The Monarch expressed his delight at the DG’s visit to Anambra State and his acceptance of the traditional honor.

“We are deeply honored by your presence in Anambra State today,” Igwe Egwuonwu said. “Your visit to our community and your acceptance of this title show your commitment to unity and progress. From today, you are a distinguished member of the Igwe Council of Umuawulu Kingdom. We will continue to work with you for the growth of Anambra State and Nigeria.”

A Symbol of Unity and Progress

The Monarch emphasized the symbolic importance of the title, stating, “On behalf of Umuawulu community, the Anambra NYSC family, and the nation, I confer upon you the title of Dekora 1 of Umuawulu Kingdom. May God guide and strengthen you in your service to Nigeria.”

NYSC DG’s Response

In his response, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed thanked the community for the honor. He urged Corps Members to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, stressing the importance of cultural harmony in nation-building.

“This title is not just a personal honor but a symbol of unity,” he said. “It reminds us that we are one Nigeria, regardless of tribe, ethnicity, or religion. This is the core mission of the NYSC.”

Empowering Corps Members for the Future

The NYSC DG also highlighted the scheme’s efforts to empower Corps Members through skill acquisition programs. He noted that these initiatives aim to equip young Nigerians with practical skills for self-reliance after their service year.

“We will continue to collaborate with state governments and traditional institutions to ensure Corps Members gain skills that benefit them and the nation,” he added.
